April 2023 – Far Removed, Close to Finished

For those who missed the reveal last month, my WIP is entitled Far Removed.

Banner with marine life.

I’d like to start by promoting a couple of fellow indie authors who have released books this April. Behold these amazing covers:

  • Hiraeth is the third and final(?) instalment of Ceril N Domace’s Fae Queen’s Court. What thrills and heartaches await the lovely Williams family? I had to look up the meaning of the title, it’s beautiful.
  • Adam Joseph makes his debut with The Arcannen Chronicles: Magicom. It is an alternative Victorian fantasy with airships and elemental magic.

My Book News

While my proofreader was hard at work, I had scheduled a good portion of this month for preparing my cover and decorative interiors. However, when you illustrate educational material in a freelance capacity, some projects are moved forwards and working overtime becomes necessary. So I am a little behind on my book design but I need to focus on that now. Phillip, my typesetter, starts work on Far Removed in a week’s time. Before my next newsletter, I will share cover reveals and preorder links on my socials. My mailing list and prequel novella might only be ready in early June. I apologise for keeping you waiting on that front.

Real Life Adventures

One of my biggest supporters is my brother, Paul. A while ago, we celebrated his birthday by playing tourists in our home city. This was my only real day off in a month. We started with the Two Oceans Aquarium. Some highlights included seeing a playful octopus, one of my favourite animals, and a shyshark laying an egg. We ended the day with a boat ride around Cape Town Harbour. A couple of dinky Heavyside’s dolphins breached at a distance. Though they did not break the water at the side of our boat, I spied one below the surface, investigating us. I’m always delighted by encounters with these magical water spirits. A part of me is still the twelve year old who wears dolphin t-shirts and jewellery.

Photos of Heavyside's dolphins, one next to boat, one breaching from afar. Knysna seahorse, octopus and shyshark photos from the aquarium.

A lot has been said about a certain technology that must not be named. You know, the one that “borrows” the text and pixels of creatives to generate “new” work. All I will say is that I do not intend to involve it in my writing or art if I can help it. Some authors have hundreds of stories to tell, and maybe technology will help a few to expound on their ideas more quickly. I have only a few ideas that I want to explore thoroughly. I’d like to devote time and care to them, even if shortcuts are available. Though WordPress is adding nifty features to write my newsletters for me, you can be sure my fingers have typed all the words you see here.
