November 2022 – Out of the Shadows

Confessions of a Writer

Still from my book trailer. A projectionist looks at a figure onstage. Captions read: Seeking power and knowledge, many are drawn to an arcane coastal city. Some dwell in the light, others in shadow. But few are truly seen.

Much of my WIP is about the fears that stop us from taking off our masks. One character is good at giving people what they want, but he is unsatisfied because their praise is directed at a false version of himself. Another character has insulated herself against feelings of rejection, but she has almost forgotten how to allow anyone close.

It turns out I have been processing similar issues in my own life. “Write what you know,” they say. There comes a time when you just have to put your work out there. I’ve made my characters face their fears, so it’s only fair that I should face some of mine.

Most writers are too hard on themselves. Being overly perfectionistic and self-deprecating won’t shield you from external criticism, or make it hurt less when it comes. Our readers are entitled to their preferences, just as we are. We must allow ourselves to fumble and learn. We are tougher than we realise.

So how is my WIP coming along?

On the 12th of November 2022, I pressed “send” and my editor received the manuscript, glossary, and extraneous notes. I expect to receive his feedback in December. I’ve never been one for checking where I stand in relation to other creatives as this often has a debilitating effect on me. But it is good to have a little objectivity. Whatever my skill level, I know Jonathan will raise the standard.

I celebrated the handover with quiet moments and some days of minimal social media activity. No one will ever tell you you’re allowed to pull away from the world, but you absolutely should. I wasn’t raised to value activity for its own sake, even if it’s what all the algorithms demand.

I’ve met a number of inspiring indie writers on Instagram and Twitter, and have started buying their books. They’ve blown me away with their originality. My recent reads are by authors, Casie Aufenthie, Chesney Infalt and Branwen O’Shea. I’ll keep posting reviews on my socials.

Sneak Peek

Here’s a slideshow with stills from the book trailer I animated. I’ll be posting the full video on Twitter and Instagram later today.
